Title: The Importance of Language... and Thinking Before We Speak

Presented by: Jennifer Hill Buehrer LMSW, Trinity Health Ann Arbor Hospital

Description:

Communication is an essential skill in health care, and social workers are the experts in this area.  Our medical colleagues are trained to communicate in a certain way, and often it is focused on how information is shared with each other.  This workshop will present an opportunity to explore ways in which the language many of us use in health care can alienate and even marginalize some of our patients, and facilitate discussion about ways we can help each other be more thoughtful about the language we use - with our patients, their families, and with each other.

Objectives:

  1. To examine why and how language is not just a means of providing information, but of communicating intent, expectations, values, etc.
  2. To analyze language we are trained or habituated to use in the medical field, and discuss how it benefits us (and especially our patients) to be more intentional
  3. To formulate and discuss some alternative ways of communicating with our patients, families, and colleagues - and helping our colleagues do the same
