SWHPN / HPNA Webinar: Why Suicide Happens: How Clinicians Can Reduce Risk for Patients, Caregivers, Colleagues, and Loved Ones
Tuesday, March 09, 2021, 3:00 AM - 4:30 PM EDT
Category: Webinars

Suicide risk training is more likely to be needed than CPR training, yet many clinicians aren’t adequately trained to assess for suicide risk in their patients, colleagues, or loved ones. Understanding the dynamic nature of suicidal thoughts are critical to providing “mental health first aid” clinicians can provide in a time of increasing isolation and hopelessness.

To that end, join the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network (SWHPN) and the Hospice and Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) for a joint session with Brian Mistler, PhD, clinical psychologist and President of ResolutionCare Network, for a discussion on how clinicians can better understand suicide risk, methods for assessment, and how to reduce suicide risk for patients and families during times of anxiety and depression. Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions to Dr. Mister following the presentation as well as discuss their own experiences in the clinical setting.

Target audience: Social Workers, Nurses, Psychosocial Professionals, Physicians, and related Clinicians

Content level: Beginner

After attending this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the relationship between lack of connection, hopelessness, and pain that leads to increased risk of suicidal thoughts.

  • Separate the risk of suicidal ideation from the four additional components that increase the danger of a suicide attempt.

  • Translate basic suicide prevention theory into intervention targets that reduce risk for patients, caregivers, colleagues, and others.

  • Identify barriers to discussing suicide directly.
