Social Work Hospice & Palliative Care Network (SWHPN) Seeks Executive Director

The Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network (SWHPN) is a national membership association dedicated to amplifying the voice of psychosocial social workers working on interprofessional teams across a variety of settings. The organization provides education, webinars, resources, and an annual conference to support its members, who range from clinicians to researchers to administrators. The organization is facing an exciting period of growth, and is seeking its first Executive Director (ED) to lead and continue this growth. 

The ED will be responsible for the executive leadership of the organization, overseeing programmatic excellence, membership retention and growth, continued financial viability and the development of new revenue sources. Further, the ED will work closely with the SWHPN Board of Directors and staff to implement good governance policies and procedures.

The ED will be highly visible in the hospice and palliative care and healthcare arenas, and will seek out partnerships and opportunities to promote the mission, vision, and key priorities of the organization. This is a 12-month contract position at 75% FTE (estimated 25-30 hours/week), with work to be performed remotely. Salary range commensurate with experience.

Key job responsibilities include:

  1. Facilitating growth of the organization by designing and implementing strategies to enhance the membership experience, including retaining current members and recruitment of new members.
  2. Developing key relationships with stakeholders in healthcare, hospice and palliative care, social work, nursing, policy-making, advocacy, and certification industry, and as is appropriate, representing SWHPN at national meetings and events, and on committees.
  3. Overseeing all programming, including design of new initiatives and execution of current activities, to enhance SWHPN membership and strategic partnerships.
  4. Facilitating the financial growth by evaluating, developing, and implementing strategies to create new and more robust sources of funding in order to achieve short- and long-term goals.
  5. Supporting the Board and committees by harnessing Board members’ expertise, contributions, and connections to promote the goals of SWHPN through an open, productive and respectful collaboration with the Board of Directors.


  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Nonprofit Management/Leadership, or related degree.
  • Industry experience in palliative care or hospice preferred.
  • Demonstrated skills in leading and growing an organization required, including evidence of program management, strategic planning, sound fiscal management, fundraising, relationship/coalition-building, and effective Board communication.
  • Proven track record in a membership association required, with documented success in increasing organization/ industry visibility, maintaining/increasing constituent satisfaction, and increasing membership numbers/revenue.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, maintain, and propagate effective working relationships and partnerships with peers and national stakeholders/leaders.
  • Experience working effectively with board of directors in nonprofit settings.
