SWHPN joins National Coalition colleagues in letter to Senator Ted Cruz on Palliative Care

Posted By Natalie Kovacic, Thursday, February 16, 2017

Dear SWHPN Members and Friends,

This past week, SWHPN crafted and signed on to a National Coalition for Hospice and Palliative Care letter to educate Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) about the nature and goals of palliative care.  In a CNN health care debate last week, Senator Cruz likened palliative care to “dop[ing] up” older adults “with some drugs” before their “time to go.”  With our Coalition member colleagues, we explained to the Senator the nature of palliative care, and its benefits to patients and their families for an improved quality of life.  We additionally opened the door to a meeting to introduce him to leaders in hospice and palliative care, and to discuss the importance of expanding access to palliative care in the U.S. health care system. (Click here to view the Coalition letter.)

Thank you for the important work you do for our clients and families.  SWHPN will continue to represent the field of palliative social work among our interprofessional colleagues, policy leaders, and the media. We welcome the opportunity to dialogue further at our 5th annual meeting in Scottsdale next week.  We look forward to seeing you there.

Grace Christ, PhD, Chair, and Gary L. Stein, JD, MSW, Vice Chair
